Let me ask you a serious question. Do you get pissed when you find evidence that other people have been using your desk and computer at work?
I do. I have about 95% of the office's confidential documents on my computer and in my drawers. It's one thing for my boss to turn my computer on to print off a document he needs, but it far exceeds someone's bounds to use my computer as their personal workstation because I'm not here.
I left work at around 12:45 yesterday. I hadn't felt well all morning and had taken one of those anti-nausea pills which not only didn't work, but had made me extremely drowsy.
Because Scott and I are taking a long weekend at Myrtle Beach, I have a lot of crap to do today before we leave. I need to get an oil change, do some packing, make sure the cats have a few caches of food - you get the drift. I had only intended to come into work for a couple of hours this morning to make sure my assistant can get all the documents she needs to get for Monday.
I come in at 7:30 as usual, drop my bag at my desk, and find that there's a dirty coffee cup on my desk. I haven't had coffee in four months. I'm also extremely ANAL about leaving dirty dishes on my desk. I just don't do it. Someone had changed my automatic just-click-play NPR feed on Real Audio to whatever jacked up CD they were listening to yesterday. They cleared out my instant messager password. My mouse was on the wrong side of the keyboard and someone had been rifling through my pencil cup. Apparently, the part-time help thought it would be a great idea to use MY desk as his work space when he came in, regardless of the fact that the other part-time guy WASN'T HERE and he could have used his computer.
But guess what? My desk is in a primo location where NOBODY CAN SEE THE FUCKING SCREEN. That makes a perfect location for him to come in and look at myspace.com and facebook all day, DOESN'T IT? I opened up the candidate tracking database to see if he'd tried to get in using his user name and password. Nope. Suspicion confirmed. He sure as hell didn't do any work.
I was a germaphobe before, but being pregnant, I REALLY don't like sharing germs with people now. If he uses my fucking headphones again I'll...I'll....I don't know. I'm almost tempted to change my login password to fuck him up if he comes in today. I'll just set some traps. I'll clean out my internet explorer cache so I can see all the sites he visited while I was gone.

Posted by: Barry at June 4, 2006 12:02 PMBarry must be said asstwat. I guess he found more info than you suspected.
Each employee has their proprietary space and equipment and they are to be respected. Agreed. Since you are charged w/sensitive info, your space should be doubly sacred. I'd frag his ass - and move on.
I don't know who this Barry twerp is, but No duh it isn't my computer. Just because I don't have an office with a lock on the door doesn't mean that my space should be used by part-time slackers.
The fact of the matter is if files come up missing and our proprietary information gets out, I get the blame. ME, MYSELF, AND I. It doesn't matter that I didn't pay for the machine. Should I NOT take vacation days or go home sick so that I can instead sit sentry at my desk at all times? I don't fucking think so.
Posted by: Tiffany at June 6, 2006 04:12 PMCan you lock all your stuff up? And lock your computer? That's what I had to do after I found out the cleaning staff had been looking up porn on my computer. Instead of, you know, CLEANING. Ick.
