Coworker: "I never even asked. How much did the coffee cost?"
Me: "They're $12.95 a box"
Coworker: "Whew! If I'd known they cost so much I would never have bought any. I would have went to the grocery store and bought some instant coffee crystals."
Okay, here's the deal...we have boxes of single-serve coffee pods delivered to us through our water vendor. Since we (meaning "they") couldn't cough up the money and be responsible enough to buy coffee when we were taking turns, we turned to this alternative. That way if someone doesn't pull their weight, they don't have coffee to drink - they'd suffer alone.
If you don't ask when the coffee is delivered and you're taking boxes two at a time, how can you complain about the price after the fact? I realize that a new hire is unfamiliar with the system and doesn't know how it works, but wouldn't you think to ask "Is this free???"
