I gave my protegé a raise today (under instruction from Bossman who also happens to be his Dad-man), but the kid totally deserves it. The fact that he's only working 15 hours per week now that he's attending classes again has put me in the sticky situation of having to hire more help ... of course anyone brought on after him would have to make less than him, so therefore, and blah blah...
Originally we ("we" meaning the staff under the age of 40) wanted to bring in some college kid, call him or her an "intern" and not pay them. That way I could have as many interns as I wanted and I could just sit around supervising them on which toothbrush to use under the toilet seat. Bossman insisted that we pay them something so he decided that minimum wage would be sufficient - let's just call it a "gas stipend."
It really sunk in today that I'm management. Imagine that right now I'm doing that "Snoopy" dance. I've transcended beyond managing "stuff" (i.e. the office) and now have living, breathing things to boss around. *cries a little*
I believe that's the biggest benefit of getting into a start-up business on the ground floor. Within a couple of years if you're doing what you're supposed to be you inevitably get people reporting to you. Right now everyone else in the office works on sort of a "peer" level where they share resources and basically have no real influence on the activities of the others. Well, all except one guy. He's about to get a subordinate.
Bossman basically plans to double the business every year. I think he wants to have some sort of empire. Right now we have 11 people on staff. Probably 12 by Monday. By next year I'll be moved away from the front door where I have to deal with all the creepy vendors and the UPS guy who can actually spell my last name.
Okay, that's a bit ambitious, but maybe then I'll get business cards.
