We're in the process of finding qualified interns to work in our office - people who can take some of the clerical burden off my shoulders in exchange for having research experience/a business writing portfolio.
It's been tough. Compared to last year when I re-entered the job market, the market has become severely undersaturated with qualified candidates: it's a candidate-centric market.
This time last year so many graduating students would have grabbed at a part-time job that they would have been clawing at each others' eyes for a chance to earn $7.50/hour. I posted an ad a month ago with career services at my alma mater and didn't get a single nibble. My coworker thought he could do better. He wrote a new ad and got one nibble. The folks who work in career services also sent him a packet of résumés of qualified students.
Not a single one was interested. They'd all accepted employment elsewhere, or else their résumé had been stewing so long that they were altogether inaccurate.
This is tough. There have GOT to be some kids out there who failed a course and need to attend one more session of summer school before graduating. Where are they?
This is a fucking cake job!!!! This isn't the standard internship where some kid would wear finger condoms and collate paper all day. These kids would actually be gaining work experience.
I guess I have to lower my standards and give a buzz to the career counsellors at the local high schools.
I'd making a fucking GREAT supervisor. I'd put them in a corner with a keyboard and mouse and let them do their job. I'd check back in 30 minutes to make sure they weren't playing minesweeper, and that's it. No micromanaging. Just do it and I'll check it later.
Whose feet do I need to wash to be thrown a freakin' bone here!
