Excuse my ignorance, but is it a part of Islamic culture for the men to give the women who walk into their convenience stores looks that say, "If you were in my country you'd be stoned"?
Posted by Tiffany at April 28, 2005 07:27 AMIslamic? Most of the conv. store workers I've seen are Indian or Pakistani--Hindu, Sikh, among others but, yes, America is as good as it gets for women.
Posted by: Nanc' at April 28, 2005 08:37 AMYes, it is. I was deployed to a number of Islamic countries, in some places the female airmen could not go into populated places with their faces uncovered...looked kind of strange with a uniform.
Posted by: wordweaver at April 28, 2005 10:16 AMI should have specified "African-born" islamic, or at least I'm assuming as much with sames like "Housoun." We do have lots of Indian store owners too. They normally just take my money silently and give the "Why do you eat that shit?" expression.
Posted by: Tiffany at April 28, 2005 12:31 PMGirl. I had a recent experience like that. This guy REFUSED to talk directly to me. He would only give my fiance eye contact and speak to him.
*smh*
Bless the wives.
Posted by: MsThing at April 28, 2005 05:39 PMDon't know that this is even necessarily an ethnic thingmaybe just a gender thing. I get that same reaction when I walk into my local neighborhood Schucks Auto Supply store! I'm your basic middle-aged white woman and the store in question is staffed by white men who clearly think women shouldn't be working on cars. (Note that this is not a chain-wide problem. I've never had any problems in any other Schucks store. In fact, most of them have a female employees who know the business just as well as the guys.)
Posted by: Carol at April 29, 2005 03:16 AMma'm I have an Islamic neighbor... we had a dispute about a tree growing very near our mutual property line. he attempted to speak to my husband about it, hubby said that I own the property (which I do) & that he'd need to speak to me. Hubby says you should have seen the look on neighbor's face... he has yet to speak to me... heh.
