I hate no-shows. Granted, once or twice in the past I didn't show up for piano lessons on my scheduled day because I was broke as hell and couldn't pay my teacher, but that's another story.
We're in the process of interviewing (yes, again) folks for account executive positions. I wanted to minimize the amount of work I would potentially have to do by weeding out the duds from the get-go and only contacted those we'd really want to see. So, out of maybe thirty or so Monster.com applications, I called three. All three expressed interested and scheduled a time to interview.
One applicant came in yesterday. She seemed pretty bright and got along well with everyone, however we wanted to see if the remaining two candidates had any industry experience.
Well, the one guy that did have some experience was today's no show. What really pisses me off is that he really seemed interested and sent me follow-up e-mails and was sure to return my call as soon as possible. Then he chose not to show up today. That's grand. For whatever reason he had, unless it was an act of God, it isn't good enough.
I have a special hanging file in my personnel files for jerkwads who don't show up for interviews. While I can't exactly ban them from the premesis, I can remember their lack of enthusiasm for the next time they apply. For example, we had one candidate from several months ago that cancelled his interview the day of. When I placed the Monster.com ad before Thanksgiving, he sent me an e-mail stating he was available again. "Oh really?" I thought. Must be some helluva job he had for five months that he's trying to flee it already. I sent him a letter expressing that we'd be considering other candidates.
We have another woman coming in tomorrow to interview, and my boss is lunching with another right now.
You'll know more when I do.
